Home schooling

Home schoolingDeciding to do home schooling is a big decision and not one to be taken lightly. It is something that will change your child’s life, and you need to decide if you are a good enough teacher, if you have time and if your child is suited to it. Kidssmart.org.uk has some tips and links to useful sites about home schooling and how to go about it.

Most children that learn at home are taught by their parents, though if you have enough money a tutor can be a good idea. One of the main reasons that children are home schooled is because of a travelling lifestyle because of parents’ work commitments, in which case a tutor is best.

Home schooling is not an easy task to undertake unless you have already had training in teaching children. In the UK each child that is taught at home still has to follow the national curriculum so that he or she can still learn the same as other children, and can go on to higher education and get good jobs when they are older.

There are many websites that offer print outs and activities for parents and tutors of children that are undertaking home schooling. These websites are outlined here on kidssmart.org.uk, and offer educational resources for children of all ages and abilities.

Home schooling does not only refer to teaching your child their entire curriculum at home without them attending school, but can also refer to having extra lessons outside of school time. Home tutoring is popular if your child is having difficulty in a certain subject or to learn skills, such as playing a musical instrument.
